We attend births because we too experience birth as a labor of Love. Each birthing woman and each birth is unique, new and sacred. We listen, we follow cues, we guide and sometimes we are simply patient. We always monitor physical signs of pregnancy, labor, birth and postpartum periods to make sure they fall within our range of competency and the accepted norms. We recommend medical consultation or transfer of care if necessary.
We help in establishing for the birthing woman and others present a sense of openness and calm, through our own trust and respect for the passage into parenthood. We protect the birthing family's need for privacy, but stay close by to meet emerging needs.
By choosing home birth, a woman demonstrates her confidence in birth as a normal and integral part of her life, taking place within her sphere of influence. She feels safe within the midwifery model, where information is freely given, decisions are made together and attention is given to all levels of health.
